German fascism in 1940\u20131944 in modern French society. After the surrender of France in June 1940, a collaborative regime was established, led by Marshal F. Petain, which was directly related to the mass arrests and deportation of the country&#8217;s Jewish population. The collapse of the regime in 1944 and subsequent trials of the Vichy government did not alleviate the problem of understanding this period of history in the collective memory of the French. The article discusses the features of the approach of the governments of the Fifth Republic to the interpretation of wartime events, the dilemma of the choice between the desire to forget the dark pages of French history and accepting them as an integral part of their past. The article analyzes the main trends in the coverage of events of 1940\u2013 1944 in the official politics of memory. The author suggests that the memory of the collaborationist past was purposefully supplanted by the plot of the French participation in the Resistance movement and France\u2019s significant contribution to the fight against fascism. There is a lack of an unambiguous interpretation of the activities of the Vichy government still, which presents wide opportunities for the French political forces to use the appeal to the historical
