to adopt the declaration on regional cooperation. The location was deliberately chosen to allude to a similar meeting of the three kings, which took place in 1335. Such reference to the shared history of the four nations (in 1993, Slovakia became an independent state) could be interpreted as an intention of the Visegr\u00e1d group to form an identity based on the politics of memory. This article provides insight into the politics of memory in Hungary and the Czech Republic as one of the factors contributing to the formation of the Visegr\u00e1d identity. We studied the cases of Hungary and the Czech Republic, because these countries represent two different approaches to the politics of memory: one views history as the means of education, while the other \u2014 as the embodiment of the (ethno-)nation state identity. For Hungary, the memory politics is rooted in the tradition of nationalism, which is attributable to the specifics of the Orb\u00e1n regime. Therefore, the politics of memory is in many respects determined by the perception of the Treaty of Trianon (1920) as of \u201ctrauma\u201d. The politics of memory in the Czech Republic stems from a different context, and that is the Czech de-nationalization, characterized by a weak sense of patriotism and weak national identity. For the Czech Republic, ongoing issues in Europe mainly determine the politics of memory. In conclusion, the article suggests that differences in the memory politics may hinder the states from transitioning to the regional politics of memory, which is currently non-existent and is not
